PITTSBURGH — Pfizer Inc. is launching its own generic version of AstraZeneca’s heartburn medication Nexium, the company said Tuesday.
“Pfizer has decided to launch a generic version of AstraZeneca’s Nexium (esomeprazole) in the United States for a low cost generic alternative to Nexium (esomeprazole). This is a big step in the right direction for Pfizer and other manufacturers.”
Pfizer was the first pharmaceutical company to launch a generic version of Nexium in the United States.
The generic version will be available by prescription only, with the price going up to about $70 for a 30-tablet bottle.
Pfizer’s U. S. patent on Nexium is set to expire March 27, 2017, but generic makers could also begin selling their own versions in the U. this year.
Pfizer said that in recent months, there has been an “unusually high demand” for generic Nexium, which is the second best-selling product for the company to launch. But the generic is the most cost-effective option for most patients.
The drug is used to treat the symptoms of ulcers and other stomach conditions.
